Description
Kalona is a 47’ LOA Marconi rigged cruising cutter, originally built by Nunes Brothers Boat and Ways Co. at Sausalito, California in 1936. She is a classic full keel boat with wheel steering, inboard rudder, diesel engine and accommodations for 4, fully equipped for long distance cruising. Original construction is 1 3/8” Douglas fir carvel planking over steam bent white oak frames, with lead ballast, teak decks and superstructure. An extensive rebuild was completed in 2005 at the respected yard of Wayne Ettle in Wilmington, CA. The rebuild included replacement of all frames, and all planking below the waterline, a new purpleheart stem and knee, in addition to all planking fasteners. The new bottom is double planked kapur wood set in epoxy, bronze fastened to laminated kapur frames. The varnished sitka spruce mast is a double spreader rig with 7/8 jumpers and running back stays. Kalona symbolizes the character and style of a bygone era. She is a well traveled veteran of cruises to New Zealand, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, twice thru the Panama Canal and across the Atlantic, thru the Mediterranean as far as Turkey, and a frequent Catalina Island visitor. She has been well cared for and maintained by her current owner for over 50 years, but now his age forces the transfer to a younger caretaker.
