Description

Kailani was manufactured in the United States by Columbia Yachts on the East Coast under the auspices of the Whitaker Marine Group in 1973 as a shoal keel sloop. Kailani is a “Columbia 45” and is a documented vessel with the US Coast Guard. The Columbia 45’s that came out of the Virginia factory weighed approximately 13 tons dry. Kailani’s most recent haul out for new bottom paint and hull inspection, this past November of 2022, showed a weight of 16 tons on the scales. Kailani has been meticulously maintained by a seasoned sailor/owner. Her bilges are dry and have also been repainted and updated over the years. This is an opportunity to own a boat that has had tasteful upgrades and constant maintenance throughout.

The current owner purchased Kailani at the end of 1998.

Kailani’s current owner did an extensive refit of the boat between 2001 through 2006 that was both functional and aesthetic with extensive system upgrades, including all new wiring, instruments, plumbing, engine and transmission rebuilds, new diesel heater, appliances, new cushions, canvases, mattresses etc. The following details are provided, with extensive logbooks, pictures, and accounting records provided upon request to a potential buyer.

Wiring:

  • All wiring was replaced with marine grade tin coated cables and gauges brought to modern marine electrical standards.
  • Two custom made Seward Marine Electrical Panels were designed, built and installed, with all breakers and buss bars for both 120 A/C shore power systems and the D/C 12 volt system replaced with new.
  • All wiring was removed and replaced.

Batteries and Charging system

  • During the refit, the original batteries were removed. Four Trojan LI6H 6-volt batteries were installed in a custom battery box placed forward of the engine. Those batteries were replaced in 2010 with glass mat or gel batteries. In 2016, those batteries were replaced with 9 Group 31 AGM batteries.
  • The 9 group 31 AGM batteries are in two banks, house and starting. Kailani is equipped with a 3000Victron Inverter/ Charger and a secondary Victron backup charger.

Standing Rigging and Anchor system

  • The original BBB chain was replaced with 430 feet of 5/16 high test galvanized anchor chain.
  • Sea Tek pulled the mast and replaced the standing and running rigging between December 2002 and February of 2003. Sea Tek also rewired the mast and placed an anchor light, strobe light, and tri color light at that time. All running rigging was replaced with double braid quality line.
  • All running rigging lines have been run back to the cockpit with all new blocks for ease of single handed sailing.
  • There are four Barient winches, two 26s in the cockpit for the genoa sheets and two 21s moved from the mast and mounted under the Dodger for the halyards.
  • There are two main halyards, the second halyard acting as a backup.
  • The original chain plates were replaced with new chain plates;
  • The original turnbuckles were replaced with new turnbuckles.
  • Dyform II Compacted wire was utilized for the standing rigging.

Hatches

  • Three custom teak hatches were built and installed, all with Lexan Mar-10 inserts.
  • Two Lewmar hatches replaced the factory hatches over the forward and aft berths, and a third hatch was added for access to the aft lazarette.

Traveler

  • The original design did not include a traveler. A Garhauer traveler was added mounted on a custom-built teak base installed aft of the boom.

Electronics

  • During the refit, all electronics were either changed or added:
  • Raymarine mechanical autopilot under the aft berth with the controls at the binnacle guard in the cockpit;
  • Raymarine combined radar/ chartplotter/ GPS with custom installation that allows the unit to rotate for access while the operator is out of the weather under the dodger;
  • An Azimuth 1000 digital compass replaced the original analog compass (the original analog compass is onboard);
  • Raymarine ST-60 Tridata gauge—depth, speed, log (the speed never worked well and the owner has always utilized the GPS speed over ground instead);
  • Raymarine ST-60 windspeed was installed and worked well for many years. It stopped working and the owner removed its masthead in 2023. The unit and cable need to be replaced.

Plumbing

  • Kailani was fully replumbed during the refit;

Windows

  • The windows in the Saloon were fabricated and installed during the refit. They are made from 3/8” Lexan Mar-10, installed with 10” stainless bolts through stainless T-Nuts mounted on the pilothouse, replacing factory windows that were installed in aluminum frames press-fit into the pilothouse. Teak frames were fabricated and cover the interior of the Saloon windows.

Decks

  • The original decks had been covered with many layers of sand-like material and painted. The sand-like material was removed, the deck tops finished with Sterling deck beads, and painted with Sterling LP paint. The decks have subsequently been refinished and painted a couple of times with AWL Grip LP, and two layers of fiberglass were added to the decks in or about 2017.

Furling System and Sails

  • During the refit, a Profurl system was installed for the genoa. In 2010, the genoa was replaced with a custom, new, approximately 135%, 10 oz. genoa through UK Sails.
  • The main sail still has good shape.

Aft Cabin

  • The aft Cabin has minor modifications. It is set up for a single large berth, fitted with a 5” latex mattress inside a custom upholstery cover matching the other upholstery in Kailani. On top of the cover is a 2” latex topper.

Heads and Holding Tanks

  • The original heads and galley were sea-water filled. They were upgraded during the refit for fresh water only.
  • The aft head has a stall shower. All plumbing was changed and all through hulls throughout Kailani have been replaced and changed as needed. During the refit, the aft head was replaced with a manual Raritan PHII head. A fresh water collapsable tank was added to fill the head with fresh water instead of sea water. The collapsable freshwater tank ruptured. The owner then connected the pressurized water system directly to the PHII head with a manually operated ball, shutoff valve.
  • The forward head was gutted and rebuilt during the refit, adding a freshwater holding tank under the counter adjacent to the sink. A Raritan electric PHII head replaced the then existing head. A new counter and cabinet were constructed and installed.
  • Before the refit, Kailani had a single, 50-gallon holding tank forward of the engine. That holding tank was removed. A 15-gallon holding tank is now seated on the sole in the forward head. An 8-gallon holding tank was installed in the aft cabin servicing the aft head.

Galley

  • The Galley was gutted, the sink and range swapped, a Force 10 range was installed, deep, double stainless-steel sinks were installed, and a Moen mixing fixture was installed. The Moel mixing fixture was subsequently replaced with another Moen mixing fixture.
  • A Panasonic Microwave was fitted above the sink.
  • The Alder Barbor refrigeration system was replaced with a Nova Kool refrigerator/ Freezer. A pantry was added adjacent to the Nova Kool unit.

Pulpit, Pushpit, Stanchions, and Toerail

  • The Pulpit, Pushpit, stanchions, and stainless steel toe rail were removed and polished. All fasteners were replaced with stainless steel fasteners and bedded with 3M Marin 5200.

Fuel Tanks

  • The original 120-gallon fuel tank was removed and replaced with two adjacent tanks. The first is a 40 gallon “day tank.” The second, never filled with fuel or used, is approximately 80 gallons. The system is set up with transfer pumps to transfer fuel from the storage tank to the day tank or from the day tank to the 1.25 gallon Sigmar Marine heater tank.

Water Tanks

  • The original water tanks were accessed and refurbished;

Rub Rail

  • The rubber rub-rail was removed. The area was replaced with a mixture of West System epoxy and west system 404. Subsequently, the rub-rail was covered with fiberglass.

Engine

  • Kailani is powered by a Perkins 85 hp 4-cylinder diesel engine. She also has a Borg Warner transmission. That engine was rebuilt down to the heads during the refit. The transmission was pulled and rebuilt by SW Diesel Marine in Wilmington California. According to the Hobbs Meter on the boat at that time, there were approximately 1,800 hours on the engine at that time.
  • After spinning a bearing in 2013, the engine was pulled and rebuilt from ground-up by SW Diesel in Wilmington California. SW Diesel reported that except for a few metal pieces found in the engine (from spinning the bearing), the internal parts appeared new. There are now approximately 500 hours on the rebuilt engine.

Transmission

  • Kailani has a borg Warner Velvet Drive transmission, model AS2071C with a 1.52.1 ratio. In 1999, the transmission was pulled and rebuilt by SW Diesel, the West Coast Perkins expert that rebuilt the engine in 2013.

Heater/ Firebox

  • A Sigmar Marine diesel heater was installed in the Saloon, gravity fed by a 1.25-gallon tank.

Sole

  • When acquired in 1998, Kailani’s interior had carpet throughout. During the refit, a bamboo sole was fabricated and placed in the Saloon. The hatch covers in the galley and dinette were replaced with bamboo covers. Most of the interior was painted with Awl Grip LP paint. There is a vinyl headliner and teak veneer covering most of the Saloon.

Chart Table and Seat

  • A Chart Table was built and installed in the Saloon with a new Catalina 40 seat purchased from Catalina. A custom, mirror polished stainless steel seat support was fabricated by a commercial fabricator. The seat was upholstered to match the other upholstery in Kailani.

Settee

  • A Settee/ daybed was constructed and installed in the Starboard side of the Saloon. It is 96” long and 30” deep. There are four legal-size storage bins below the daybed. The back of the Settee pulls up and reveals additional storage behind the Settee.

Interior Lighting

  • Most of the lights were replaced with Alpenglow LED teak lights. The light in the Aft head is an Alpen glow unit but it has the original halogen bulb.
  • The forward cabin has dimmable Alpenglow Caribbean reading lights. There is also one dimmable Alpenglow Caribbean reading light above the Settee adjacent to the companionway.
  • The aft cabin is currently lit with LED rope lights.

Portlights

  • In 2022, all portlights were replaced with custom-dimension, New Found Metals 316 stainless steel opening portlights.

Dodger and Canvas

  • A new Sunbrella Dodger and most other canvas items (forward hatch cover, covers over galley and dinette hatches, covers over Saloon windows, sacrificial dodger cover, binnacle guard cover, aft hatch cover, winch covers, and a new bag for the awing) were installed in February 2024.

Awning

  • Kailani has a custom awning that is stored in a bag and kept on the deck tied to the starboard, forward lifelines. The awning flies above the boom between the mast and the rear of the boom.

BBQ

  • Kailani has a large Magma propane BBQ mounted on the pushpit. Both the Force 10 range and the BBQ are powered by propane. A custom stainless steel propane rack was designed, fabricated, and installed on the pushpit holding four 1.5-pound propane tanks. One tank is for the Force 10 range, one is for the BBQ, and two are stored to replace the others when they run out of propane. The tanks also function as seats at the aft of Kailani. The tanks and rack are covered with Sunbrella canvas covers.
